Some Facts about Cystic Fibrosis
  • Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the number one genetic disease of children and young adults in the U.S.
  • One in 29 Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene.
  • Every day, approximately three babies are born with CF in this country.
  • With 90 cents on the dollar being invested in vital CF programs, the CF Foundation is an organization that is making a difference.

About Us

In January of 2004, a fun-loving, four-year-old, little boy, Shad Murphy, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.  Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. This disease causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. These thick secretions also obstruct the pancreas, preventing digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines to help break down and absorb food.  As you can well imagine, Rodger and Gwen Murphy, Shad’s parents, and Levi, Shad’s older brother, suffered through a time of turmoil.  But by the spring of 2004, the Murphy family had focused their energies and organized a huge turnout of walkers who all helped to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Central Pennsylvania in the Great Strides Walk in York County.

In addition to their efforts with the Great Strides Walk, the Murphys wanted to do more to help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  They have organized a group of individuals touched by the devotion of the Murphy family to the fight against CF.  This group eventually called itself Team Shad, and by January of 2005, Team Shad began organizing the first annual Score Fore a Cure Golf Tournament to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which was held on June 29, 2005.

Today, Team Shad works in conjunction with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Central Pennsylvania and helps to raise funds to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis patients in our region directly. Team Shad has raised over $750,000 since we have joined the fight. 100% of the money that we raise goes directly toward helping people in our area who are living with Cystic Fibrosis.

Because of our close work with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, we share the 501 (c)3 number of 13-1930701 with the foundation.
